52 Dresses: The Heart of a Woman as Seen by God
Ch 7: Dress of Originality

Yahweh, you examine me and know me. You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works! My very self you know. -Ps 139: 1, 13-14

The love of God made me unique.

There is an object in our lives that accompanies us daily and makes us reflect almost without realizing it. I would dare to say that it is alive and speaks to us. Surely you already know what I mean. Indeed, it is the mirror, that bittersweet companion we show our authentic selves to every morning before we get cleaned up and made up.

It has witnessed your transformation and the passage of time in a way that is often unnoticeable, but certainly honest. It doesn’t hide anything from you; it knows your secrets and each one of your perfections and imperfections. It has been a silent witness of your transformation and maturing … and why not, of your most profound and most original monologues.

Before it, you have grown to become a woman. In front of it you have struggled.  You have screamed and sung in front of it. You have cried and laughed. You have met, rebelled and finally accepted yourself in it.

It is a reflection of your life and mystery, of your profound uniqueness, of that which only you know about yourself, and which you do not always dare to present to the world.

But now I present another mirror, one that is kinder and closer. One who knows you and who speaks to you more than you speak to him. He is alive and very present. He doesn’t just reflect your outward appearance but invites you to look inside yourself.

He is the creator of Heaven and Earth, your God, of whom you are a precious and cherished image. He created you with an unrepeatable originality, and he takes you deep inside his heart, inviting you to imitate him so that you can be yourself. He carries your most authentic image within his heart. He desires you to look at it and spend time before him so that you can see the reflection of your originality, created and kept in the deepest part of his being.

Every morning, when you get up he is there watching you as a father watches over the dreams of his beloved daughter. He looks at you in silence and dreams of you and your happiness in a special, unique and unrepeatable way.

Do you want to find yourself? Do not search outside — go inside, deep inside your heart. Don’t follow anyone else, don’t imitate anyone else, don’t dream of anyone else. Instead, discover who you are and why you exist by imitating that original image of you that only God has. That is your mission in this life, to discover yourself while discovering God. Don’t waste time, don’t distract yourself, don’t follow ideals that act like a dense fog, hiding what you need to see on the road ahead and making you slow down your progress.

Look at yourself each morning in the silence of that heart which is waiting for the moment when by looking at yourself, you find yourself; by finding yourself, you accept yourself; and by accepting yourself, you realize that you, and only you, can be who you should be, because you are unique, loved, dreamed of and blessed with this dress of originality.

Not that we dare to class or compare ourselves with some of those who recommend themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding. -2 Corinthians 10: 12

Stop for three minutes in front of the mirror and observe your most distinctive characteristics. Then devote a couple minutes more to the features of your unique personality, asking God for help and thanking him.

May I know you, Lord
as I am known by you
Reveal yourself fully to my soul
And I will rest in you, my only treasure.

I am a pilgrim of the peace that only You can give
I count sunrises waiting for your visit
Free me from myself, Lord,
So I can fly to the nest of your love.

Hide me under the shadow of your wings
Fix my gaze on your blessed hands
Keep my tears in your heart
Cleanse my guilt and free me from all evil.

Jesus to my soul

I know you from all eternity
I thought of you with love, I created you with joy
You are mine, and for you I gave my life
Do not fear, here I am, deep within you.

I am also a pilgrim in your heart
My tent is well rooted
I want to walk to the deepest part of you
If you let me, I will heal all your wounds.

I know you, my beloved,
But let me move forward without limits
Open all doors and windows to me
Well your soul is mine, much loved.

Do not be afraid, to know you is my delight
It is my life and my joy
I want you to know yourself in knowing me
I am your maker, savior and redeemer.
